No job too small. Really.

A shed door, a rotten step, a gate that won't latch. I like small jobs, and I build them with the same care as a full deck.

“Apologies if this is too small a job.”

A homeowner in Halifax, in their first message about new shed doors

They didn't need to apologize. The job was a pair of cedar shed doors. They asked again at the end of the job, a little surprised I'd come out for it at all.

Here's the honest answer: I like small jobs. They're a chance to do one thing really well, meet a neighbour, and leave something that will outlast the part it replaced. A small job done right is still built right and built to last.

What I take on

Small jobs I do.

Doors and gates

Shed doors, garden gates, sticking or sagging doors rehung, new hardware.

Steps and stairs

Rotten treads, wobbly stringers, a loose handrail before someone gets hurt.

Deck repairs

Swapping out bad boards, fixing railings, tightening up a tired deck instead of replacing it.

Rot and trim

Soft window sills, door frames and trim, repaired and the cause fixed, not just painted over.

Kickout flashing

A small piece of metal that keeps water out of your walls. See my overhangs and kickouts page.

Safety and access

Grab bars, sturdier railings and small changes that make home easier to get around.

Common questions

Before you call.

Is my job too small?

Probably not. If it's carpentry and it matters to you, ask. If it's something I can't take on, I'll tell you plainly and point you to someone who can.

Do you charge more for small jobs?

You pay for the time and materials the job actually takes. You'll have a written quote before any work starts.

How soon can you come?

Small jobs often fit between bigger projects, so they can happen sooner than you'd think. I'll give you a real date when I quote.

Can you do a few small things in one visit?

Yes, and it's a good way to save. Send me your list and I'll quote it as one job.
